AI at the University Writing Center
Western Illinois University
Fall 2023
Project Description
This semester, part of our training will focus on the role of artificial intelligence in writing centers. Through reading writing studies and writing center scholarship and discussing theories and praxis during staff meetings, our goals are to:
- Apply writing studies and writing center pedagogical theories across appointment modalities (face-to-face, online, etutoring)
- Understand how students, faculty, and staff perceive writing centers' utilization of AI
- Learn when and how to apply AI during a session
- Create a best practices for AI at the UWC list
For Part I of our work this semester, we'll create an annotated bibliography of texts on AI and writing centers. Consultants responsible for leading discussion groups this semester will:
- Choose 1 text from the 2023-2024 Staff Meetings Schedule → SP24 Reading Options tab or find 1 academic source on AI and writing studies/writing centers (published within the last 3 years; the more recent, the better)
- Each consultant must choose a different text. Please add your text to the Spring 2024 Reading Schedule → Text Selection tab and reference it frequently to avoid selecting the same text as another consultant.
- Someone must choose the texts marked with the **.
- Add the source to our SP24 Collaborative Annotated Bibliography and include
- complete bibliographic information (APA)
- a summative statement (2–3 sentences summarizing the author(s) argument)
- application (2–3 sentences explaining how we can apply this text to face-to-face, online, and etutoring sessions)
Lead a small-group discussion about your text during a staff meeting
- Begin the conversation by summarizing the text
- Work with your group to answer the discussion questions on the Spring 2024 Reading Schedule → Group Discussion tab
- As group leader, you are responsible for typing your group's responses to the discussion questions
When you're not leading discussion during the staff meeting, you will be assigned 1 of the articles to read. We'll break into small groups where you will discuss the text you read.
Part II of this project is where we will reflect on what we've learned about AI, how we'd like to use (or not use) it at the UWC, and consider what we'd like to know more about. We'll create a best practices for AI at the UWC list to implement in future training sessions on AI.
