ENG 100: Introduction to Writing

Introduction

Welcome to ENG 100! In this class, we are a community of learners working to grow our writing and reading skills and craft an academic identity. I won’t sugarcoat it—writing is hard work, but if you give this course your all, you’ll leave with the tools you need to continue your writing journey. We’ll work to prepare you for the reading and writing tasks you’ll be assigned throughout your time at WIU and beyond!

Course Description

Introduction to writing as a social act with emphasis on developing flexible reading and writing processes for a range of genres. Offers guidance and practice for those who need additional preparation for college-level writing. Not open to students who have completed ENG 180 or 280 with a grade of C or above. Graded A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, or U.

Learning Outcomes

In English 100, students will be introduced to writing as a social activity with the goal of providing them with the knowledge and strategies that will help them develop as writers. Specifically focusing on writing processes, students in English 100 will:

  • Practice a range of reading and writing processes
  • Learn about and practice invention, drafting, and revision strategies
  • Learn about and practice grammar, mechanics, and usage conventions
  • Identify the audience, purpose, and context when you read
  • Understand your audience, purpose, and context when you write
  • Practice working with others during invention, drafting, and revision
  • Develop and practice your writing process and adapt it to different situations
  • Identify your strengths and challenges as a writer and develop a confident attitude for your writing
  • Examine how your social identities, values, beliefs, and behaviors affect your writing
